What You May Be Needing

  • Water to dissolve the stain
  • Paper towels or cloth to blot the stain
  • Baking soda
  • Stain removers like salt, hydrogen peroxide, white wine, dishwashing liquid, etc.
  • Vacuum cleaner to clean the debris

Various Methods to Remove Red Wine Stains

When wanting to clean a red wine stain from the carpet, it is imperative to act fast.

While you certainly can’t start cleaning your carpet with the guests loitering around your house, we do suggest blotting the stain and sprinkling ice on the area to make the stain easier to remove.

Furthermore, another point to consider when learning how to get red wine out of carpet is that warm water will never be your best buddy in this venture.

Use cold water instead.

This is because warm water makes the stain more set, making it all the harder to remove.

Method 1: Use White Wine

Consider this as the holy grail of erasing red with white.

Red is visible, but white is not.

  • Start by blotting the stain.
  • Pour white wine over the area to neutralize the red pigment
  • The wine should just be enough to cover the stain
  • Blot again, and your stain should have disappeared by now.
  • If it does not, we suggest sprinkling some baking soda on it for five minutes.
  • Blot again, and voila!
  • Your carpet is as good as new.

Method 2: Use Baking Soda

  • Blot the red wine stain.
  • Keep adding water to dilute the stain as much as possible and keep blotting it out.
  • Afterward, pour a thick paste of baking soda and water. ( The paste must be very thick with very less water)
  • Keep the paste set for around 15-20 minutes.
  • The baking powder should have disappeared into the carpet and the stain removed.
  • Next up, vacuum the area to remove any remnants of baking soda.

Method 3: Use Vinegar

The reason we suggest using this method is that vinegar is readily available in your kitchen cabinets and a natural carpet and rug cleaner.

If you are in a jiffy to clean the stain, then vinegar will be your savior.

  • Use a paper towel or a rag to blot the liquid
  • Let it dry out.
  • Pour a tablespoon of vinegar into two cups of water. (Note: You can use warm water here as it’s better, and the acidic nature of vinegar neutralizes the impact of warm water)
  • Use a clean cloth and dab the solution onto the stain until it starts to disappear.
  • Once the stain shows no signs of being affected by the vinegar, continue blotting with a dishwashing liquid.
  • Get rid of the dishwashing liquid’s residue by using any damp cloth.
  • Finish blotting by using a piece of dry cloth…and  your stain has disappeared!

Method 4: Use Hydrogen Peroxide

  • Blot the stain with paper towels to remove the excess liquid
  • Spray hydrogen peroxide onto the stain.
  • Be careful to spot-test the solution since hydrogen peroxide can bleach your carpet, so we suggest using the solution on only white and beige carpets.
  • Follow by sprinkling some baking soda on the area and letting it sit for a couple of minutes.
  • Once the baking soda has settled in, use your vacuum cleaner to remove any baking soda residue.
  • Finish blotting with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Let the area air dry, and now your carpet is as clean as before.
