How do you like your house to smell?

Maybe you wanted a citrusy smell.

Or probably sweet, or could have no smell at all.

But definitely, no one wants their house to smell like dirty old socks, do you?

Carpets and rugs are made of mostly fiber; they can contribute to how your house would smell like.

That is why it is essential to make sure that your carpets or rugs are cleaned from time to time.

Reasons why Carpets or Rugs Get a Bad Odor

There could be a lot of reasons why your carpet smells.

It could be due to some molds, pee from your pets, or spills from children.

Might be because of accumulated dirt or your carpet is just so old.

Maintaining the cleanliness of rugs and carpets can be tedious.

However, fortunately nowadays, there are easy steps you can do to avoid smelly carpets and rugs.

As matter of fact, if it is minor cleaning, all materials can be found at your home.

Home Remedy Guide

Before anything else, you need to identify first what kind of odor your carpet or rug has.

It could be a surface odor or could be a deep odor.

Here is some DIY carpet cleaning you may follow:

  1. Baking Soda

Baking soda might be enough especially if the odor is coming from a certain spot on the carpet.

As you know, baking soda is very useful in removing stains and smells.

  • Sprinkle baking soda on the area where it smells and leave it for about a day or preferably 2 days.
  • Make sure you work it down up to the bottom of the fiber to target and remove all unpleasant smells.
  • After leaving it for 2 days, you may now remove the baking soda off the carpet
  • Sweep the top of the carpet with a broom and dustpan.
  • Use a vacuum to remove the rest of the powder.
  • If the smell is still there, you might want to try a deeper carpet cleaning.

Now for a deeper cleaning, follow this mixture:

  1. Vinegar + Water Mixture

Ingredients:

1 cup – White Vinegar

2 cups – Warm water

  • Mix them and put them in a sprayer bottle.
  • Spray it on the area where the unwanted smell is coming from.
  • Make sure to control the amount you spray.

You do not want to spray excessive amounts, or you might add more moisture which can lead to mold growth.

  • Then, sprinkle baking soda once again.
  • Leave it for a few hours.

Just in case the vinegar mixture and baking soda still don’t work, we still got more home remedies.

  1. Hydrogen Peroxide + Water

Ingredients:

5 parts – water

1 part – hydrogen peroxide

  • Put the mixture in a spray bottle.
  • This time, you shall apply it at the back of the carpet to target mold or the unwanted odor.
  • Let it dry to avoid mold growth.
  1. Essential Oil + Baking Soda

Ingredients:

½ cup baking soda

30 drops of essential oil

(avoid using tea tree oil if you have pets because it can be toxic for them)

  • In a container that has holes just like a spice container; transfer the mixture of baking soda and essential oil.
  • Leave the mixture for a few hours preferably overnight.
  • Sprinkle the mixture on the carpet.
  • Vacuum your carpet after 15 or 20 minutes.

The smell should be gone after.

  1. Foam Carpet Shampoo

  • Vacuum the carpet or rug
  • Apply the shampoo to the carpet with the use of a sponge
  • Avoid applying too much to avoid excessive moisture.
  • Let it dry.
  • Vacuum again.
