Oriental Rug Cleaning: What’s an Oriental Rug?
You probably think that “it’s just a carpet” and nothing special about them.
That learning or digging for information about them is just a waste of time.
It’s because rugs are rugs.
They are all the same.
But you’ll be surprised that there are different kinds of rugs on the market.
And if you’re not using one at home but planning to, knowing about them might spare you some time and money in choosing and deciding what to buy.
Most importantly, you’ll have an idea of how to handle and clean it if you know something about it.
To describe oriental rugs in the simplest form, oriental rugs are rugs made in Asia.
Countries like China, Tibet, Iran, Pakistan, India, and Turkey are the ones popular producing these types of rugs.
They are hand-woven.
Wool is the general material used, but silk and bamboo are used as well.
What’s its difference from a Persian rug?
A Persian rug is actually under the umbrella of Oriental rugs.
But because of its popularity, it is perceived to be a different type.
Because it is well known it is interchangeably used as an oriental rug.
How often an Oriental Rug must be cleaned?
Oriental rugs acquire more dirt than others.
However, it depends on how many times you’ll clean your rugs to where you put them.
For example, if yours is in an area where there is high traffic, let’s say the living room, hallway, or lounge, and then a weekly vacuum is needed.
If it is located in guestrooms on the other hand, where there is lesser traffic, then you may vacuum it once a month.
Well, it still depends if you’ve spilled something or something stained it.
How to Clean an Oriental Rug at home?
Rug and carpet cleaning can be challenging especially if you have a very busy schedule every day.
These kinds of the rug are very delicate.
They can easily acquire dirt and can easily lose their color if not cleaned the proper way and not stored properly.
With oriental rugs, you need to treat and clean them gently for they can easily wear out.
Follow these steps if you plan to do DIY rug cleaning:
- Gently vacuum both sides of the rug.
- Make sure to remove the vacuum beater bar and use your specialist low pile carpet attachment.
- Vacuum the rug according to the direction of the fiber until all the specks of dust, debris, and pet hairs are removed.
- If your vacuum is a little bit too aggressive, you may use a broom with soft bristles and sweep all the dust, debris, and pet hairs, still in the direction of the fiber.
- Wet both sides of the rug by spraying cold water.
- Use a rug shampoo or pH-neutral detergent mix with cold water then lather unto the rug according to the direction of the fiber.
- Rinse off properly with cold water.
- Lastly, let it air dry.
Can you use Vinegar in cleaning an Oriental rug?
Definitely. Vinegar can help remove odor and stains from the rug.
Vinegar has been a great partner in household cleaning.
Not only because it is versatile and effective.
But it’s also affordable.
For rug cleaning, mix vinegar and warm water and spray it on the rug.
If you need extra power in cleaning your rug especially if it has stains, with your warm water ready, you can mix ½ teaspoon of pH-neutral detergent and ¼ cup of white vinegar.
